Seventy-one public schools will be offering free meals to students starting Friday and extending through the summer, the Hawaii State Department of Education announced. The food service program aims to help low-income children receive nutritious food that they might not otherwise have.
The program, Seamless Summer Option, is available to all children 18 or younger, even if they do not attend the school where the meals are served.
Meals will be served Monday through Friday, except on June 11 (King Kamehameha Day) and July 4 (Independence Day). A list of locations and times for the meals can be found on the DOE's website. Parents are also encouraged to call their child's school to find out about specific dates and times and if they have questions about the service.
To qualify for the Seamless Summer Option, a school must have a population where 50% or more of its regularly enrolled students qualify for free or reduced lunches and run some type of summer program on campus. Students need not be enrolled in these courses to receive meals over the summer.
