The Conversation: Organic Solutions for Hawaii's Produce and Pests

Today we talk organics, and what to you do if you are trying to reduce the chemicals used to kill or keep away creepy crawlers, rust or fungus. To some people, it’s important to go all natural.

Joining us today are: 

  • Evan Ryan is a Maui Farmer, agricultural landscape designer, consultant, and educator.  He is the author of Hawai'i Home Gardens: Growing Vegetables in the Subtropics Using Holistic Methods and the founder of Pono Grown Farm Center, a non-profit that hosts internships, classes and workshops on a 15-acre site that raises vegetables, fruits, chickens and bees.

  • Tane Datta has been farming on Hawaii Island for forty years. Tane grows micro mix, edible flowers, herbs, salad greens, avocados and medicinal plants, such as kava, on his farm in Honaunau. Tane, along with his wife Maureen, also run the Adaptations, Inc. CSA, which distributes produce from small organic farmers to buyers across the Big Island.

  • Jay Bost is the senior farm coach for GoFarm Hawaii, an intensive program that teaches beginning farmers how to care for and manage their own farm. Jay also works with the Hawaii Seed Growers Network, Farmlink Hawaii, and the Waimanalo Co-op.
