Today HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence continues the conversation with this member of one of New Orleans’ most celebrated musical forces:the Neville family, and Ivan Neville of the band Dumpstaphunk.

Jeff Farsai

Ivan is a veteran of The Neville Brothers, Bonnie Raitt’s band, and has worked with Rolling Stone Keith Richards in his X-Pensive Winos side project. He’s even recorded with The Rolling Stones.

Dumpstaphunk recently released the album Where Do We Go From Here.

In part one that we aired yesterday, the talented keyboardist shares the story of catching and battling COVID-19. He’s the first guest we know of in the series to contract the virus, and his journey through the illness is a riveting tale. He also explains how after he recovered, he and the band participated in a project based around a film soundtrack, and makes his appearance even more special by joining us from his home in New Orleans with a keyboard at hand, using it to share some of the earliest songs he learned as a child, including one taught to him by his legendary father, Aaron Neville.

Today we've dialed in on Ivan's simply remarkable experiences with both The Rolling Stones and their guitar icon Keith Richards. He explains it all started in the mid-1970's when his uncle Art's band, The Meters, opened for the Stones, who would eventually also have The Neville Brothers as openers. Ivan recounts first meeting the band, then getting to record with them and even appear on Rolling Stones albums, and finally become part of Keith's band, the X-Pensive Winos. He also shares a hilarious story of having Carlos Santana sit in with him at the Fillmore in San Francisco, while Dumpstaphunk was opening for Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. As he did during the first part of our interview, Ivan spontaneously offered up a musical performance, this time of a portion of one of the songs on their new album!
