Hawaiʻi County reopened Thursday all public lands north of the estuary at Honuʻapo in Kaʻū.
The county closed the fishing and recreation area in October due to bagasse fires. Bagasse is organic pulp leftover from sugarcane processing.
The Hawaiʻi Fire Department says the area has significantly cooled.
The County Department of Public Works has also erected fencing around the affected area so the public can maintain a safe distance.
