Grave markers at Sunset Memorial Park in Pearl City have been mapped using Geographic Information System. The state hopes a new website will help the public provide more information on those buried there.

The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs has launched a new website that will gather and share information on loved ones at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Pearl City.

The portal allows members of the public to submit information on anyone buried at the cemetery. It also indicates current grave markers and other identifying information.

Sunset Memorial Cemetery has been neglected for years. Public records show it is owned by Hawaiian Cemetery Association, but that entity was dissolved in 2010.

In 2018, the state Legislature passed a law that reduced liability for volunteers who clean trash and maintain the cemetery.

The law also tasked DCCA with coming up with short and long-term plans for the burial site.

Last year, the department hired a surveyor to map the cemetery and create a website and database.

The portal can be accessed at sunsetmemorialparkhonolulu.org.
