The Hawaiian Electric Company says 38% of the energy it generated last year came from renewable sources.

The utility last week announced it increased its renewable energy generation by 4% in a year, and nearly quadrupled it since 2010.

HECO cites the return of geothermal operations on Hawaiʻi Island and the increase in private rooftop solar as factors for the yearly increase.

Utility President and CEO Shelee Kimura says she is confident HECO will achieve its goal of reducing carbon emissions from power generation 70% by 2030.

Hawaiian Electric does not provide service on Kauaʻi. The Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative reports that nearly 70% of its electricity comes from renewable sources.
