Latest city council discussions on Honolulu condo fire safety and 'dawn to dusk' lifeguard program

A Honolulu City Council committee Wednesday deferred action on a bill that would extend the deadline for condominiums to install fire suppression sprinklers — and allow some buildings more time to conduct surveys of their fire safety readiness.

The Public Infrastructure and Technology Committee instead approved the creation of a two-person subcommittee that would investigate how to bring residential high-rise buildings in compliance with fire safety requirements.

Members of the Public Safety Committee also heard from numerous residents in support of the "dawn to dusk" lifeguard program.

The program, which allows lifeguards to patrol island beaches outside the 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. workday, started in July.

The council is deciding whether to allocate more than half a million dollars for the program’s continuance.
