Maui County parents have been left off the sidelines, unable to watch their kids play organized sports due to pandemic restrictions.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino's most recent executive order from Sept. 15, the "Safer Outside" initiative, prohibits spectators from indoor and outdoor events.

This restricts many parents from watching their children’s sports games.

Councilmember Mike Molina urged Victorino to reconsider his mandate.

"If the mayor is allowing tourists to have luaus, why not allow our parents — many of whom are residents and tax-paying citizens — watch their children play in various group activities and sports?" asked the councilmember.

An online petition asking for parents’ support to watch their children’s games in Maui County reached nearly 2,000 signatures as of Friday morning.

Victorino plans to reassess the Public Health Emergency Rules next month.
