HONOLULU — There were more than 100 hate crimes in Hawaii over the past five years, according to the FBI.
Of the 120 hate crimes recorded by the FBI, 39 involved white victims, 34 were against Black victims, 12 against Asian victims and three against Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday. Eighteen of the 120 recorded crimes were against gay males.
During the same period, Native Hawaiians were listed as responsible for 49 of those crimes, while 26 involved white offenders, 14 involved Asian offenders, five involved Black offenders and six were listed as having offenders with "multiple race," the newspaper reported. Eight were unknown.
"Because of their wide-ranging impact, investigating hate crimes is a high priority for the FBI," said Steven B. Merrill, special agent in charge of the FBI's Honolulu field office.
There were four hate crimes reported in Hawai‘i last year, with three incidents targeting white people and one being anti-Muslim, according a report from the state attorney general's office.
