Unvaccinated University of Hawaiʻi Students Will Have COVID-19 Testing Requirements

NPR

The University of Hawaiʻi announced in May it would require all students on campus to be vaccinated. Earlier this month, it said it would not enforce the policy after a survey of staff and students showed more than 9 in 10 were vaccinated.

Now, while student vaccination requirements are still in place, unvaccinated students will no longer be disenrolled from in-person classes. Instead, they will have to follow a (minimum) weekly coronavirus testing mandate.

However, unvaccinated students may be ineligible for certain job opportunities and field research — which may affect degree requirements for students. To get the full campus experience, getting the vaccine is highly recommended, the school said.

The university also rescinded its requirement that all employees return to campus on Aug. 3. Faculty and staff will still have the COVID-19 telework option.

Supervisors must approve of their employee's telework requests while maintaining sufficient in-person support and services. The unions are also working on a non-COVID-19 telework policy that will hopefully be implemented by the end of the year.

Everyone at UH will continue to upload daily health checks to the LumiSight app, which has been updated to accommodate vaccination information.

Students and employees can upload their vaccine information now. Work is underway to integrate COVID-19 test results into LumiSight.
