Acting City Prosecutor Dwight Nadamoto, who received a federal subpoena on Monday, said on Thursday that he has done nothing wrong and intends to comply with it.
Nadamoto was appointed acting head of the prosecutor’s office in March by the elected prosecuting attorney, Keith Kanehsiro. Kaneshiro went on paid leave after being named as a target in the federal investigation of Louis and Katherine Kealoha.
“In the years the Kealoha investigation has been going on and the federal government has been looking into the office’s practices and procedures, dozens of people have been called to testify," Nadamoto said.
Although he referenced the Kealoha investigation, Nadamoto went on to clarify that he does not yet know what the subpoena concerns. The city's top criminal attorney said that he does not know anything that would help federal authorities in their probe, but has no qualms about answering their questions.
"I'm more than happy to answer any questions they have. There is nothing more important to me and the people of this office than that we be honest and hard-working and transparent,” he said.
Katherine Kealoha was formerly a deputy in the prosecuting attorney’s office. She and her husband, the ex-Honolulu chief of police, were convicted on charges of corruption, bank fraud, and conspiracy.
They are due to be sentenced in March.
