Flossie Weakens To Post-Tropical Cyclone As It Approaches Islands

National Weather Service
Green areas are under a flash flood watch. A small craft advisory covers the light purple areas and a high surf advisory is posted for the dark purple shores of affected islands.

Updated: Aug. 5, 5:35 p.m.

As a weakening Flossie, now a post-tropical cyclone, moves closer to the islands, it is bringing high surf, heavy rainfall and muggy weather to parts of the islands, particularly Maui and the Big Island.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, Flossie was located 80 miles north-northeast of Hilo.

Swells from Flossie will affect mainly the east-facing shores of the main islands.

A flash flood watch remains posted for Maui and the Big Island where heavy rainfall and flooding are possible through late Monday night. The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency warned possible flooding is especially a threat for the windward side of the Big Island.

A high surf advisory through Tuesday has been posted for east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island with waves potentially rising to 8 to 10 feet. The weather service said strong breaking surf and currents make swimming dangerous.

A small craft advisory is posted for waters of the main islands until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The next update on Flossie is scheduled for 11 p.m. Monday on the Central Pacific Hurricane Center website.
