Honolulu Police Chief: 'I Am Certainly Not Kealoha.'

Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard appeared before the Police Commission, which met for the first time since the guilty verdicts in the Kealoha mailbox trial.

Ballard gave a blunt assessment of the department's and commission's actions while her predecessor, Louis Kealoha, was police chief.

Ballard's reference to the $250,000 was a severance package approved by the Police Commission -- then Chaired by Max Sword.

Kealoha and his wife, Katherine, a former city prosecutor, were convicted on federal conspiracy and obstruction charges.

Earlier today, the state Supreme Court revoked Katherine Kealoha's law license on an interim basis, while she appeals her conviction.

Police Commission Chair Loretta Sheehan said there are now procedures to question the actions of the police chief -- a process that was not in place before.

Casey Harlow was an HPR reporter and occasionally filled in as local host of Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
