Protests Against TMT At UCLA, More College Campuses Today
Protestors rallied against the Thirty-Meter Telescope on college campuses in California today. Demonstrations are planned for UH campuses tomorrow.
Two-days of protests against the Thirty-Meter Telescope on college campuses across the country kicked off at UCLA.
Students and community members marched across campus chanting and holding signs saying “We Stand with Mauna Kea”
Protest organizer Kealoha Pisciotta said in a press release that she hopes these demonstrations will raise awareness of the continued resistance to TMT by some in the community.
The $1.4 billion telescope will allow astronomers to see deeper into space than ever before and with finer detail.
The project received the final go ahead from the Hawai?i Supreme Court last fall.
Opposition to TMT by those calling themselves “protectors” of the mountain stems from their belief that the mauna is sacred.
Student protests are planned for universities in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Hawai?i.
Their message is to Stop TMT and Divest from Destruction, saying science must evolve to align wiht the protection of sacred places and indigenous peoples worldwide.
