Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra 2022 Broadcasts
HPR and Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra have partnered to broadcast performances from the 2020 Sounds of Resilience season and the 2021 Sheraton Starlight Series.
Each show is hosted by HPR Music Director Gene Schiller and features performances recorded live at Hawaii Theatre Center and the Waikiki Shell; many also include interviews with the HSO maestro and/or guest artist.

January 11 - Galaxy of Strings
The virtuoso strings of the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra take center stage, led by Ignace Jang. Enjoy the Hawai’i premiere of "Starburst" by Jessie Montgomery – a young American composer whose music has been electrifying audiences across the nation – Handel’s lyrical Concerto for Harp with the HSO’s own Constance Uejio as soloist, and Tchaikovsky’s impassioned Serenade for Strings.
January 18 - From Chaos to Calm
Joseph Stepec leads a program featuring two unique portraits of America: the finale of Dvorak’s American, written while the Czech composer was living in the United States, and American trailblazer William Grant Still’s touching "Mother and Child for String Orchestra." Shostakovich’s chilling Chamber Symphony, a work inspired by war-torn Germany, and Bach’s delightful Concerto for Oboe and Violin with HSO’s J. Scott Janusch and Claire Hazzard, take us on a programmatic journey from chaos to calm.
January 25 - Sweet Psycho Suite
Our spine-tingling showcase begins with Caroline Shaw’s "Entr’acte" and Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances. The Theatre Organ at the Hawaii Theatre Center takes the spotlight in Albinoni’s "Adagio for Organ and Strings." Hermann’s scary suite from the movie Psycho, and Camille Saint-Saëns’ crowd-pleasing Carnival of the Animals, with its musical depictions of exotic wildlife like tortoises, kangaroos, a swan – and pianists – complete the program.
February 1 - Going Home: Songs of Comfort
This live performance features a new arrangement of Dvorak's soulful "Going Home" by Michael Thomas Foumai, CPE Bach's electrifying Concerto for Flute, and "Lyric for Strings" by American master George Walker, the first African-American to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music. We are honored to give the Hawai‘i premiere of Within Her Arms by Anna Clyne, a Grammy-nominated and London-born composer praised as "fearless" by NPR and a "composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods" by The New York Times.
February 8 - Sounds of the Season
Concertmaster Ignace Jang leads the HSO in a celebratory tour-de-force featuring Sounds of the Season from London, Italy, Argentina, and Hawai‘i. Winter comes to town with two representations, from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, plus movements of Handel’s cherished Messiah with soprano Martina Bingham. Anna Lenhart join as soloist in Mozart’s triumphant Horn Concerto. This evening of yuletide closes with two special guests, vocalist Pomaika‘i Lyman and Kanoe Miller, hula, in a festive medley of holiday favorites.
February 15 - Mozart & Beethoven
Acclaimed guest Conductor Rei Hotoda leads a program featuring masterworks of Beethoven and Mozart with HSO Principal Clarinet Louis DeMartino in the spotlight.
February 22 - Tchaikovsky’s Fourth
Urgent, supercharged - even violent - Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony is a concert experience not to be missed. Under the direction of conductor Rei Hotoda, the HSO are joined by Nā Hōkū ‘Ōpio | Young Stars winner Mira Hu (Punahou '21) for Schumann's Cello Concerto. Michael-Thomas Foumai's "Raise Hawaiki" complete the program under the stars.
March 1 - Florence Price: American Master
Don't miss an electrifying performance under the stars in Waikiki featuring a program led by rising superstar conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, and joined by beloved vocalist Raiatea Helm. The program features Symphony No. 4 by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have her music performed by a major orchestra, and Michael-Thomas Foumai's "Fullmetal" - a hyper-techno-like surge of energy inspired by the genre of Japanese Anime.
March 8 - Mendelssohn and Young Stars
Inspired by a trip to Scotland, Mendelssohn’s picturesque Symphony No. 3 takes you from the Palace of Holyrood to the majestic Highlands. This program is conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya and features a concerto performed by Erin Nishi, a winner of the HSO’s Young Stars competition.
March 15 - West Side Story & More
Hawaiʻi native Sarah Hicks leads a program of eclectic American works including highlights from Bernstein’s West Side Story and Copland’s Rodeo.
March 22 - Rhapsody & Rachmaninoff
A pair of audience favorites—maestro JoAnn Falletta and piano soloist Lisa Nakamichi—close the summer with a bang in a program featuring Rachmaninoff’s radiant Second Symphony and Gershwin’s ever-popular "Rhapsody in Blue."
