Short Reads: Torpedoes and Guava Jelly: The Hawai’i Front during the US Civil War

Short Reads: Torpedoes and Guava Jelly: The Hawai’i Front during the US Civil War

Please join us for our second Spring 2024 presentation of “Short Reads: The Hawaiian Journal of History Author Series” on Monday, March 25, 2024, 11am-12pm at Windward Community College, Hale Laʻakea Library 1st Floor atrium. The Hawaiian Historical Society, in partnership with Windward Community College Library, is hosting an in-person event series featuring presentations of historians of Hawaiʻi’s history.

Our March presentation is by Anita Manning on, “Torpedoes and Guava Jelly: The Hawai’i Front during the US Civil War.”

Hawaiʻi during the US Civil War was neutral, but people were aware of events and found ways to contribute...and party! Torpedoes for children? Cutting edge entertainment technology? Massive charity fundraising for wounded and sending Guava jelly? It’s Hawaiʻi!

Anita Manning is a historian and educator, with an extensive management background. She was involved in State’s World War I Centennial, has written on the history of Hawai’i science, Hawaiian history, and on museum management. Research topics include involvement of Hawai’i residents in the American Civil War, and a Boy Scout troop for children with Hansen’s Disease. She is Historian for the 120+ year old Honolulu Elks Lodge.
