‘Ohana Stargazing in Our Kaka‘ako

‘Ohana Stargazing in Our Kaka‘ako
Enjoy a night under the stars in Our Kaka‘ako! Join us for an evening of celestial wonders and hands-on learning about the art and science of traditional Hawaiian navigation as this signature family-friendly event returns to SALT at Our Kaka‘ako.
Take in the night sky from the roof of the SALT parking garage through high-powered telescopes provided by the University of Hawai‘i Institute for Astronomy.
Talk story about Hawaiian constellations, mo‘olelo and the intersection between traditional and modern astronomy with experts from ‘Ohana Kilo Hōkū and the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
Learn about Polynesian wayfinding through an interactive demonstration on star navigation with the crew of the Kānehūnāmoku, a 29-foot double-hulled sailing wa‘a.
Try your hand at Kilo Hōkū VR, a virtual reality simulation of sailing on the Hōkūle‘a, the famous deep sea voyaging canoe, built in the tradition of Hawaiian wa‘a kaulua, that has sailed around the world and sparked a generation of renewal for Hawai‘i’s voyaging and navigation traditions.
