Kenichi Maehara: Lost Legacy
Kenichi Maehara: Lost Legacy
Kenichi Maehara was the official photographer for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (then Hawaii National Park) from 1930 to 1941. After the onset of World War II, Kenichi Maehara was arrested and interned under suspicion of disloyalty to the United States, and his park studio, next to what is now the Kīlauea Visitor Center, was torn down. Though Maehara’s eruption photography continued to be used as quintessential records of past eruptions, much of the documentation concerning his time at the park was lost after the war. Join KUPU Americorps member Daniel Anekelea Hübner as he shares new research on Maehara’s life, photography, and how his work at the national park was unjustly used as evidence to incarcerate him.
