Jazz Maui Presents Sunset Jazz Featuring Impromptu

Jazz Maui Presents Sunset Jazz Featuring Impromptu

Jazz Maui presents Sunset Jazz featuring “Impromptu” with Tom Stryker playing jazz harmonica, guest vocalist Sheryl Renee, Paul January on keys and trumpet, and Jimmy C on drums and doing vocals from 5-7pm at the Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate Factory in Lahaina.

Jazz concert attendees must be 21 or older. Seating is limited and often sold out so advance ticket purchase is required at www.JazzMaui.org or https://mauichocolate.com/pages/sunset-jazz.

Jazz harmonica player Tom Stryker began his musical journey in San Francisco in 1954 under the guidance of former Borah Minevitch Rascal, Ray Tankersley. He later began playing professionally with world-famous ‘Harmonica Rascal’ Johnny Puleo. Tom went on to perform as a soloist and with various symphonies, harmonica trios, and jazz bands. He has appeared on telelvision and radio shows as well as the World Harmonica Championships in 1980 as lead player with Harmonica Express, a quartet. Tom has performed all over the world and in jazz clubs in Reno and aboard Holland America Cruise Lines.

An audience favorite, Sheryl Renee moves effortlessly between music genres. She is a vocalist, actress, entertainer, and producer. Known as the “Lady with a Golden Voice” she has shared the stage with some of the best talent in the world. Sheryl performed the national anthem for President Barack Obama and her vocals have been featured on countless CDs. She is an award-winning actress who has appeared in more than 40 theater productions.

Trumpet player Paul January got his first paying gig when he was 11 years old, playing piano for a children’s fashion show in Denver, Colorado. By 1972 he was attending music school, teaching piano and trumpet, and working every weekend. He spent the next 46 years playing in various spots around Reno and Tahoe, as a single performer playing jazz, standards, and pop, or with groups as large as 17 playing everything from funk to big band jazz. He has had the privilege of working with some of the biggest names ever to grace the stages of Reno and Las Vegas, and has made many friends along the way.
A versatile drummer, Jimmy C’s eclectic, street-wise drumming style results from years of laying a variety of musical genres such as jazz-fusion, Dixie-cowboy, and Philly doo-wop: he plays rock ‘n roll, country, and show tunes as well as jazz. Although he mostly performs live, Jimmy is also a recording artist.
Every Sunday Sunset Jazz spotlights an all-star line-up of professional jazz musicians in the upstairs open-air pavilion and offers great live jazz music and sunset views. During the concerts, chocolate sommeliers offer chocolate flights selected from 24 different types/flavors of chocolate and suggest alcoholic pairings for each flight from an extensive wine, spirits and beer list for purchase.
Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate, through its Chocolate Laulima program, supports local nonprofit organizations such as Arts Education for Children Group/Jazz Maui. Proceeds from concert ticket sales benefit Jazz Maui’s music education programs.
