Hawaiian Railway Society Historic Merci Boxcar Restoration Rededication
Hawaiian Railway Society Historic Merci Boxcar Restoration Rededication
After World War II, private citizens across the US sent railroad boxcars full of food to Europe. Hawaii sent two boxcar loads of sugar. French citizens, in gratitude, reciprocated by sending European boxcars containing French goods and cultural items. Hawaii received its own boxcar. After a receiving ceremony, our boxcar became a local landmark for many years on the Ewa side of the Ala Wai Canal where McCully Street Bridge crosses over. Community volunteers at the Hawaii Railway Society in Ewa have spent several years restoring Hawaii’s merci Boxcar. The rededicated boxcar includes exhibits. The public is invited to the rededication at the HRS baseyard in Ewa.
