Hawai‘i Stitchery and Fibre Arts presents: Lei Po‘o with Rita Sierra

Hawai‘i Stitchery and Fibre Arts presents: Lei Po‘o with Rita Sierra
Just in time for May Day, Mother’s Day, and graduation season, our guest presenter, Rita Sierra, will demonstrate how she creates her lei po‘o. Po‘o means head in Hawaiian. Rita will start with the preparations needed to make a wili style lei po‘o. It not only means gathering the materials but also having the right mindset. She will also go over the kinds of flowers and greenery that are most suitable for creating a lovely head lei. Then, the step-by-step technique to create a lei po‘o will be demonstrated. Finally, the care of the finished “flower art” piece will be covered. It takes about two hours to make a lei po‘o and our guest presenters are usually asked to spend one-and-a-half hours on their presentation. Here’s the supply list if you would like to attempt to make your own lei po‘o along with Rita: long strips of raffia, scissors, flowers with stems, green or red ti leaves, wooden clothespin, aloha spirit. Optional: any type of fern, song of India leaves, and/or Pele’s hair. Contact hsfagzooms@hsfag.com by April 5 if you want to join this Zoom workshop. Registration is required in order to get the link.
