Kahu Jonathan Stockton will give a talk on the contrast of worldviews of Tahitian and Hawaiian beliefs. He will give an indigenous religious belief context to the people and culture that the American and Tahitian missionaries encountered in Hawai‘i. As we commemorate the Bicentennial and arrival of the Tahitian Christian missionaries and the departure of the 2nd Company of ABCFM missionaries in 1822, it is crucial we give attention to the collision of vastly differing religious worldviews. This effort will focus on Queen Ka’ahumanu as a guide for pre-missionary contact, her toil over and clashes with early missionaries and towards and eventual adoption of a unique synthesis of Hawaiian Christian belief and practice. Important documents and current Hawaiian voices will be heard as we peer back to the incredible and crucial time of discovery.
