Digital literacy group hopes to inspire the next generation of computer scientists

University of Hawaii

The Hawaiʻi Department of Education marked National Computer Science Education Week this month by offering several sessions for students aimed at increasing awareness of the kinds of careers possible in the computer science field. Jobs like web developer and digital designer are projected to grow 13% between 2020 and 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s faster than the average for all occupations.

One of the groups that participated in the DOE’s weeklong event was Technology Outreach Hawaii, or TORCH. It's determined to keep the education rolling. The group is celebrating its first anniversary this month. It was formed last year by a collective of college students focused on increasing the digital literacy of Hawaiʻi’s youth.

The Conversation sat down with Chief Information Officer Timothy Huo to learn more about what his group is doing to help inspire the next generation of computer scientists.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Dec. 16, 2021. The Conversation airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on HPR-1.
