The Conversation: Matson's Historic Hawaii Ties

For today’s show we look back into our archives and explore the stories behind the Matson name. The influential shipping line has a long and storied history in the islands. We explore those ties, and look as the navigational company moves to modernize its operation.

This month, Matson's shipping lines took possession of a new ship - the Matsonia. It is the sister ship to the Lurline, which went into service at the beginning of 2020. They represent the largest and fastest vessels in the Matson fleet. Plus, we look at the  connection with a famous California garden. What’s in a name? We share the history and legacy of the Matson family line, and explore the stories behind the name “Lurline.”

Guests include Matson CEO Matthew Cox, Captain William Matson's Great-Grandaughter Lurline Menzies, Filoli Gardens CEO Kara Newport and Curator Julie Blythe Devere, and Lurline McGregor - named for the Matson vessel on which her parents met.
