Stories of Change

Credit Gary Kubota

Journalist Gary Kubotahas covered news in the islands for  40 decades.

Now he has come out with a book called “Stories Of Change,” thanks to Kokua Hawaii Oral History Project and a ggrant fromthe Hawaii Council of Humanities and the Hawaii People’s Fund. Kubota credits the idea for the book to Lawrence Kamakawiwoole.

He was a leader of the group fighting to save pig farmers from being evicted from Kalama Valley out in East Honolulu. As a teen, Kubota was actually arrested as he took part in one protest. He reflected on how that experience and Kamakawiwioole’s idea came together.

Outro Music: Mele `Uhane by Jeff Peterson & Riley Lee

Cemetery Historian

Nanette Napoleon sounds French enough. Hawaii’s cemetery historian shares with us she has family ties to French President Napoleon Bonaparte but through his brother Lucien and his time in Tahiti.  But it was a visit to Pere La Chaisein Paris that Napoleon discovered her passion for places for the dead. She had just graduated from the University of Hawaii was on a backpacking trip through Europe when someone suggested she go find Jim Morrison’s grave.

We spent time with Napoleon at the Oahu Cemetery on Memorial Day pouring over the Book of Record looking for the French Connections in the graveyard. She shared her memory of Per La Chaise.

Intro music: Church Bells by Carrie Underwood

Outro Music: Improvisation No. 3 by The Hot Club of San Francisco
