Chinatown Outreach Center Offers Free Healthcare for Homeless

A new option is now available for Honolulu’s homeless population to get healthcare. The Joint Outreach Center in Chinatown is providing free, non-emergency health care services. It is a public/private partnership between the Honolulu Police Department, the Mayor’s Office, and the Hawaii Homeless Healthcare Hui, also known as H4.

Mauna Kea Street in Honolulu's Chinatown was the site of a recent murder that is raising questions about the neighborhood's safety.

Crime Concerns in Downtown, Chinatown

A recent murder in Chinatown is raising questions about crime in that neighborhood. For one longtime observer in Chinatown, a bad situation is only getting worse.  Chu-Lan Shubert-Kwock is the President of the Chinatown Community and Business Association and a member of the Chinatown Neighborhood Board; her concern is security on the streets.

Civil Beat Reality Check

Honolulu Civil Beat has won a round in a prolonged legal battle aimed at finding out how the Honolulu Police Department handled a 2014 case of an officer accused of assaulting his girlfriend.  That assault was captured on video and triggered a number of calls for reform. But Sergeant Darren Cachola is back on the job, and the police officer’s union, SHOPO, has sued to keep private the decision to restore him to duty.

Campaign Spending Ethics

We have seen some high-profile abuses of campaign spending laws in recent years, the most recent being Congressional candidate Kaniela Ing’s $15,000 fine for filing false reports about his campaign contributions and expenditures. The Campaign Spending Commission took a relatively tolerant view, and one member said, “there are not enough good politicians.”  We asked Contributing Editor Neal Milner for the Long View on Hawaii’s campaign spending laws and the way they are enforced.

Primates Find New Home in Up Country Maui

For 34 years the Maui’s Pacific Primate Sanctuary has been home to marmosets and tamarind monkeys, which are not native to the islands. Many of them have been kept in cages and will live out their lives here in Hawaii. Catherine Cruz visited the facility in Up Country Maui to understand its place in the community.  She talked with Lucy Wormser who established the facility in Haiku which is permitted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
