Council On Revenues: Chris Grandy
It’s not a meeting that gets much press and there’s no deliberating or voting on tax revenue forecasts. But the Council on Revenues meeting yesterday on personal income does provide input for the Governor’s budget and quite possibly for yours too. This morning we’re checking in with Council on Revenues member Chris Grandy for an update. Grandy is an Associate Professor of the Public Administration Program at UH Manoa.

Does everyone have a novel lurking deep inside? Even if you don’t believe that, you’d have to admit the possibility that there are great novels out there that just aren’t getting written. November is National Novel Writing month – a time for prospective authors to overcome their reticence - and writer Gail Baugniet has some ideas about just how that can be accomplished. She’ll be offering counsel to aspiring novelists tomorrow evening at Waianae Public Library. The free workshop begins at 6:30 p.m.
- Intro Music: 50 Yards of Soul by The Poets of Rhythm
- Outro Music: The Burner by The Sound Stylistics
A week has passed since a US Navy Destroyer tested China's claims in the South China Sea and Beijing's response has been relatively restrained. The US telegraphed the mission ahead of time, so it came as no surprise, but what looks like an anti-climactic event has changed the status quo in a potential flashpoint. News analyst Neal Conan joined The Conversation via phone from his farm on the Big Island, as he does most Tuesday's to comment.
- Intro Music: Of Dice & Men by Cookin' On 3 Burners
- Outro Music: The Crisis Generator by The Sound Stylistics
The music that Booker T. Jones created with his bandmates in Booker T. and the M.G.’s in the 60’s and 70’s still sounds fresh today, kept alive by its emotional honesty and its simplicity. Their studio, Stax Records, in the back of a Memphis record store was a musical home for Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and a roster that brought the sound of Southern Soul to the world. Booker T. and his band will perform Thursday evening with a 5-piece band at the MACC’s Castle Theater, and he joined the show prior to that to talk story about his life, career, and music.
- Intro Music: You Don't Miss Your Water by William Bell
- Outro Music: Hip Hug-Her by Booker T. & The M.G.'s
