In the changing stories of Hawaii health care and insurance, several initiatives from the Governor's office are continuing to make the rounds this week in a series of public meetings. The agenda includes the state's progress in securing the proposed waiver from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, plus a behavior health plan and a no wrong door policy for seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans. The last two public meetings happen this week: tomorrow in Honolulu at the Queen’s Conference Center at 2 PM and in Hilo at noon in the performing arts hall in the College of Hawaiian Language at UH Hilo. Beth Giesting is the Healthcare Transformation Coordinator for the Office of the Governor and she joined the show via phone to tell us more about some of the initiatives on the agenda.

Fire Prevention Week - Mural Painting Exhibition: Reid Yoshida

It’s always a challenge creating a public safety message. Most of us find it too easy to overlook some of the basic precautions that can save our lives, and Captain Reid Yoshida, an investigator with the Honolulu Fire Department, sees all too often what happens when we do.  That’s why he’s part of HFD’s effort to reach out to the public through an upcoming mural exhibition that invites everyone to take part.  The 3rd Annual Fire Prevention Week (FPW) Mural Painting Exhibition takes place on September 27th (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at the Honolulu Museum of Art’s Spalding House.  Participants will have the opportunity to paint murals portraying the National Fire Protection Association’s lifesaving message:  “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep:  Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.”  This message is also the focus of National FPW, which is October 4th through the 10th.  The HFD will provide volunteer artists with supplies and a primed 4’x 8’ plywood board.  Completed murals will be displayed in front of 43 fire stations and other public venues during October.

The Republican Presidential field dwindles down by two, our current President hosts the Pope and the President of China this week, and an iconic car maker self implodes. We called Neal Conan to find out what he’s been thinking about amid the mac nut harvest on his farm on the Big Island. Conan is a regular contributor to HPR with the Pacific News Minute.

“Adventure is Calling" for New Cub Scouts: Jeff Sulzbach

Cub Scouting began back in 1930 as a Boy Scouts of America “controlled experiment,” and its success, since then, speaks for itself.   It has taught so many boys self-reliance at an early age.   It has changed with the times, though, as one might expect, and today’s cub scouts learn about things like Internet safety and addiction, the hazards of synthetic drugs and e-cigarettes… subjects their dads never dreamed of in their scouting days. Jeff Sulzbach is the Scout Executive and CEO for the Aloha Council Boy Scouts of America, which is signing up a new generation of Cub Scouts.
