The Long View; Wild Bird Workshop; Caregiving for Someone with Memory Loss; Biennale
Maybe you heard the April episode of This American Life spotlighting a study that led Ira Glass to sum it up this way: “When people most affected by an issue show up at your door and talk to you, that’s the thing that could change your mind.” It was a stunning conclusion because it runs counter to what most social science says: if you want to know what people think about an issue, send someone to talk who is most like them. A few weeks ago it turned out that the survey had been falsified and that sending gay people to knock on doors to talk about gay marriage had not changed minds at all. That’s no surprise to our contributing editor Neal Milner who says the study still provides some good teaching moments.

Wild Bird Workshop: Linda Leveen
Linda Leveen is the founder of Wild Bird Rehab Haven, whose members will offer a workshop in wild bird rehabilitation on Saturday, June 27. It’s a day-long workshop at the Manoa District Park classroom in Honolulu.

Few of us can give care to a family member with dementia and not often feel unequal to the task. As caregiving for someone with memory loss has become more mainstream, more information about the disease, the research, and the available help has also become easier to access. Still getting up every day to face a changing brain and sometimes a changing personality can be daunting. It’s why caregiving author Frances Kakugawa travels the nation to talk with caregivers. We spoke with her last year and she’s now briefly back in Hawaii on a lecture tour.

Sculptor and installation artist Kaili Chun has just had an opportunity that’s all too rare for Hawaii’s artists - to discuss and display her work to an international audience, and through it, to share concerns that are specific to life in the islands. She and her colleague Kapulani Landgraf traveled to the Venice 2015 Biennale last month as part of an exhibition of indigenous art from around the world. In the process, they opened an important avenue of communication with the art world beyond Hawai‘i. She joined the show via phone to tell us about it.
