2015 Patron's Medal - Royal Geographical Society: Paul Theroux
In the list of awards, it's a good bet you probably don't think about the Patron's medal. You're not alone in that. Not many Americans know about the honor bestowed by the Royal Geographical Society. Today, they have a reason as the Patron’s medal was presented to celebrated American travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux. We talked before he left for London and he considered this: how travel was once difficult and yet for many families, it was essential to education. Now with travel far easier, a lot of parents don’t want their kids to do it. We asked him what they're missing.

Kids First Film Festival: Ann Brandman
It’s all too rare to find movies made for children that don’t talk down to them. So many mainstream movies seem to have been made for their parents, filled with sly in-jokes that go right over kids’ heads. Children in such movies don’t initiate the action, they’re acted upon with dialogue that turns them into miniature adults. Luckily, there’s a worldwide movement in cinema in which children drive the action, draw their own conclusions, and get a chance to be the hero. Ann Brandman, curator of the annual Kids First Film Festival at the University of Hawaii, is always on the lookout for such films, and she’s bringing a selection of them to the free summer festival.
