Whether you remember your college years or are facing them with a child, you know many students and families often can’t pay for college. According to The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, of all students who started college in fall 2013, 69.6 percent returned to college at some U.S. institution in fall 2014, and 59.3 percent returned to the same institution. Many who don’t return try to find employment and now one employer you probably know is collaborating to help employees who want to start or continue college. Contributing Editor Neal Milner had a look at the program and today we pick up our long view conversation about staying in college.

Historic Hawai‘i Foundation: Kiersten Faulkner

Family Size Grows Among Highly Educated Women: Patricia Steinhoff
Not that long ago, the higher a woman's level of education, the higher were her chances of being childless. But that trend has been reversing over the last 20 years. A new analysis of Census data by the Pew Research Center shows that among women with an M.D. or Ph.D., 35% were childless in 1994 while today it's fallen to 20%. The kicker is that not only are highly educated women more likely to have children, they're having more of them - 3 in fact. We called Patricia Steinhoff, Graduate Chair of the UH Manoa Sociology Department, to get her take on the data and its implications for Hawaii.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?: Cass Foster
It’s fun to follow the progress of a theatrical production, from casting to performance and that’s what we set out to do a couple of months ago when we talked with director Cass Foster about his Kauai Community Players production of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” There are some powerful emotions going on in this play and there’s a lot to keep in balance. The show’s running now and we checked in with Cass to see how his best-laid plans worked out.
