Wednesday, February 18th – from HPR2, it’s The Conversation
Baby-care is usually a discussion topic between parents and their child’s doctor... unless it seems the topic is vaccinations. From pediatricians to politicians, opinions may be shaping a conversation far less than the science, especially when media focuses on the political spectrum. Researchers Erika Franklin Fowler of Wesleyan University and Sarah Elizabeth Gollust of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health recently reported what they say happens when a public health issue turns into a political debate. Contributing editor Neal Milner took a look at the report and joined us in studio with his take.

Boys & Girls Club 2014 Youth of the Year Finalist: Grace Peralta
Young people have so much energy and they spend a great deal of time figuring out what to do with it. In many young lives, it helps when a little guidance comes in, and that’s what the mission of the Boys and Girls’ Club of Hawaii is all about. At any given time, 14,000 young people in Hawaii are taking part in its activities, and benefiting from them. As the Club looks ahead to its Youth of the Year competition, we asked Grace Peralta, one of last year’s finalists, what the Club has meant to her.

Energy Bills: Richard Wallsgrove
For the last decade, Hawaii has tried to chart a course toward a renewable energy future. You already know about Hawaii’s clean energy initiative requiring 40 % renewables by 2030. This week, lawmakers are considering a handful of bills to expand or redefine the options. Up for hearing today is a measure that could change how we create energy communities by offering possibilities to residents regardless of the participation of their neighbors - or whether they rent or own. Meanwhile another bill scheduled for decision making today could create wind turbine buffer zones around certain areas. Richard Wallsgrove is the Program Director for the Blue Planet Foundation and he joined us with an overview of the bills.

Vision Board Workshop: Nico Fisher
What’s a vision board? It’s amazing how ideas can grow when they’re written down on a clean white board in big letters, and there’s something about the act itself that encourages us to focus, clarifying our thinking and giving it new energy. Nico Fisher is offering a Vision Board “Dream Big” workshop tomorrow evening in Kahului, and we asked her how it all works. The Vision Board workshop takes place tomorrow (2/19) at 4:45 pm in the Maui County Business Resource Center in Kahului.
