Implicit Bias: Professor Robert J. Smith
You could make the case that we all, to some degree, have stereotypes and attitudes that unconsciously affect our behavior. How they interact with the areas of criminal justice, housing, local biases, and education in Hawai'i is the focus of the University of Hawai‘i Law Review's biennial symposium. Keynote speaker Robert ("Rob") Smith from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill joined the show to continue our ongoing conversation about implicit bias in Hawaii.

Optimysstique Transformational Festival: Cab Spates
Some events seek only to entertain, while others have a loftier goal that makes entertainment only part of the experience. Recent years have seen the emergence of the so-called “transformational” festival, whose goal is community-building and a celebration of counterculture values. Cab Spates is putting one such event together for this weekend in Wailua. It’s called “Optimysstique” and Cab joined us with info about what can be expected. Optimysstique is scheduled for this Saturday at the Waialua United Church-Christ on Farrington Hwy. It runs From 8:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Maui Hospitals Seek Partnership with Hawaii Pacific Health: Wes Lo
It's a long talked about solution and one the state owned hospital network serving Maui County was hoping for. Last week the Maui Region of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation and the private nonprofit hospital group Hawaii Pacific Health announced they've come to an agreement. The move to form a public-private business partnership could shore up the three state-run Maui County hospitals. For years they have operated at a loss, which amounted to 43 Million dollars at the end of 2014. The Legislature still has to approve the deal and HHSC Maui Region CEO, Wes Lo, joined the show to provide more details about it.

Bottles for Change and holoHI: Lindy Shapiro
Lindy Shapiro is the founder of the non-profit Bodhi Education Project on Maui. At sunrise this Sunday, she will begin a month-long 750 mile coastal expedition around the Hawaiian Islands by foot and bike. The journey is called holoHI. It begins in Hilo, Hawaii, followed by Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, and wrapping up with a celebration scheduled for February 18 in Kahului, Maui. It’s in support of her project Bottles for Change.
