You can’t always use legislation to bring about healthier lives, but the law can help create the conditions to foster healthier communities. Cases in point are organizations like the Hawaii Public Health Institute and the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii. They've had successes, as well as challenges at each legislative session over the years. Continuing our look at what will turn up come opening day, Hawaii Public Health Institute and Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii Executive Director, Jessica Yamauchi joins us with what's on their wish list.

Paws for a Cause: Stacy Evensen
People who take care of animals often discover that the animals have a way of taking care of them… there’s something about looking after animals that need and trust us, that appeals to the better angels of our nature. That’s an idea at the heart of a new venture from Hale Kipa, an organization that has worked with at-risk youth in Hawaii for more than 50 years. Paws for a Cause is a dog’s day care center that will be run as a business by Hale Kipa clients. We talked about it with Stacy Evensen, the Director of Educational & Vocational Services for Hale Kipa, the other day.

How Modern Wars Frame Concepts of Conflict & Peace: Dr. Jon Davidann
The nature of global conflict is changing in a new century. Wars are now often waged without huge massed armies or front lines that can be traced on a map… But are military forces around the world keeping up with the changes, or has their thinking been conditioned by the world wars of the past century? It’s a question an international conference will take up this week in Honolulu. Hawaii Pacific University professor, Jon Davidann, is its organizer, and he joined the show via phone.

Updates on Hawai‘i’s Most Active Volcanoes: Frank Trusdell
On Hawaii Island, most of the attention these days is on Kilauea, but it’s worth remembering that the big island is home to the two most active volcanoes in the island chain. Frank Trusdell is a geologist at the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. He’ll report on the current status of Mauna Loa and present overviews of K?lauea Volcano’s ongoing eruptions in a public talk later this week.
