On the face of it, today’s US foreclosure report for November looks pretty good. Nationally, foreclosure filings were down 9 % from October and down 1 % from a year ago. Look deeper and a different story begins to emerge.  Of just the total properties that started the foreclosure process in November, there’s a 6 % increase from a year ago. That’s the first year-over-year increase following 27 consecutive months of year-over-year decreases. RealtyTrac Vice President, Darren Blomquist, joined the show to put the national findings into perspective with the Hawaii numbers

There’s nothing quite like the sound of a youth choir – young voices have a purity that no other sound can duplicate, and when those voices are massed together, the effect is one you’ll not be likely to forget.  The Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus has been developing young voices from schools throughout O’ahu for more than half a century now.  It’s presenting its 53rd annual holiday concert this Saturday. General manager Malia Ka’ai has been putting it all together, and she joined us by phone.

Hawaii Cesspoools: Gary Gill

According to the dictionary, a cesspool is an underground hole or container for holding liquid waste (such as sewage) from a building - or a place or situation that is very dirty, evil, or corrupt. Whether the second definition fits as well as the first in Hawaii, three things are certain: Hawaii has a lot of cesspools - some 90 thousand of them.  It’s the only state where cesspools are widely used, and if there is to be a plan to restrict them, it isn’t coming any time soon. Proposed legislation on Kauai went nowhere; a plan to phase out cesspools languished as Governor Abercrombie left office and no word yet whether how soon Gov Ige may act on it. So what doesn’t this mean for the state and the areas including Kahaluu Lagoon found to have high bacterial counts because of cesspools? Environmental Health Administration deputy director Gary Gill joined the show to answer.

Christmas CD, Endless Christmas: Ginai

Ginai

It’s not easy to bring out the holiday spirit on a Christmas album when you’re recording it on a hot day in June, but these things take time.  The effort is worth it if you can produce something as varied and entertaining as Ginai’s new album, “Endless Christmas, in which she shares her vocal talents with some of Hawaii’s finest musicians and singers, and covers a range of material from jazz to an acapelladoo-wop rap fusion that’s a whole new genre in itself.  She joined with us this morning in our studio.
