Marriage Equality Anniversary Discussion: Todd Simmons

This time last year, the LGBT community celebrated a victory:  With a signature from Governor Abercrombie, same sex marriage became law.  Since December 2nd, the first day same sex partners could marry, about 24 hundred couples have wed and about half involve a situation where one or the other spouses live outside of Hawaii. That’s according to the Executive Director of Equality Hawai‘i, Todd Simmons. He has been keeping a close eye on those and other statistics, especially since he is among them. He joined us in studio for a look at the past year as well as a look forward to the future.

Maui Memorial Medical Center is Maui’s only full-service, acute medical care facility. It’s the only hospital outside of Oahu that can provide open-heart surgery, angioplasty and other cardiac services. But like the other hospitals in the state system, it operates at a deficit. On Monday, members of the Hawaii State House Committee held a hearing with officials of Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital. Maui Regional CEO of Hawaii Health System Corporation, Wes Lo, was there, and he joined the show with some of the takeaways from the hearing.
