In an effort to reduce a long wait list for homestead lots, the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands offered 37 "turn-key" homes in Kapolei to native Hawaiian beneficiaries, the agency announced Saturday.
The houses, located across from Ka Makana Ali`i Shopping Center, will be built by Gentry Development Inc. in its Kanehili subdivision. The homes will be in the same style as Gentry's fee-simple houses in the subdivision, the department said in a news release.
The properties were offered to pre-qualified beneficiaries who were on the list through 1994.
DHHL has long been criticized for the delay in placing native Hawaiians on homestead lands. It recently announced plans to develop a rental property on the old Stadium Bowl-O-Drome property in Moiliili and a 137-home property in Central Maui.
"“The Department is dedicated to providing beneficiary families with an opportunity to live out the fulfillment of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act by returning families to the land,” said Hawaiian Homes Commission Chair William J. Aila, Jr. "Our hope is that families selecting lots today will now use the opportunity to their advantage, creating family stability and a stronger community.”
The department said the Kanehili homes are among 395 planned this year and 1,300 are in production with completion expected over the next five years.
