The Long View with Neal Milner: Why governors and legislators clash over COVID rules

Why is there so much conflict between governors and state legislators about COVID regulations? Some of the reasons are pretty obvious and get a lot of attention. Others, which involve the structure of government, are not. HPR Contributing Editor Neal Milner discusses the conflict and why it's more than just partisanship and polarization. Two police officers sentenced in Kealoha case

On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge J. Michael Seabright sentenced Derek Hahn and Minh-Hung "Bobby" Nguyen to 42 months and 54 months, respectively, after a jury found their "fingerprints" all over one of the biggest scandals in Hawaii history. Civil Beat Reporter Nick Grube tells us more about the former Honolulu Police Department officers and their role in the Kealoha corruption case. Click here to read the story at CivilBeat.org.

Photographer refocuses business during pandemic

It's that time of year fro holiday photos, but with COVID restrictions in place, it's been tough for local photographers to book clients while maintaining a safe space. One such photographer is Aubrey Hord of Aubrey Hord Photography in Upcountry Maui. She tells us about shifting her business because of the COVID crisis, and how the Maui Headshot Project is helping to raise money for charities. Right now, you can donate to the Maui Food Bank and receive a discounted rate for a professional headshot. Click herefor more information.

Exploring Hawaii's history through Matson's vintage images

This month, Matson Navigation Company is scheduled to take possession of a new cargo ship called the Matsonia. It's a twin sister to the thoroughly modern vessel with the vintage name Lurline - it made its maiden voyage to the Islands earlier this year. Today, we talk to Matson's archivist Lynn Blocker Krantz about a collection of vintage images that take us back to a time of cruise ships and luxury hotels - part of the early years of the stories shipping company. The iconic images are now available to order as artwork on the company's website. Click here to see the catalog.

Santa Diaries: Stories from Shaka Santa

The display of Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele is up in front of Honolulu Hale. They are wearing face masks, of course. We thought we would go back in time and enjoy some Shaka Santa memories of a different time. We talked to Joe Magaldi, who played the role of city hall's warm-body Shaka Santa for more than 30 years. You may recall Magaldi served as Honolulu's Transportation Director under Mayor Frank Fasi. Magaldi knows a thing or two about getting around. He has run the Honolulu Marathon every year except for this one because it was canceled due to the pandemic. Magaldi turns 92 in March and he still manages to get in his 10 miles every day. He shared some of his Shaka Santa stories. Click here to see the schedule for drive-by viewing and online events.
