Hawaii Department of Health update on COVID-19

Hawaii's risk for the COVID-10 virus remains low, but health officials still want to be as prepared as possible to contain any spread of the coronavirus. That includes making sure we can get the needed diagnostic tools. State Health Director Bruce Anderson tells us about the delivery status of the testing kits and the hiccups getting them on island.

Climate change effects on national security

Climate change is a national security threat to the United States. That was the message given to U.S. Senators in a recent briefing by national security experts. They say climate-related events are already fueling conflict and political instability around the world. HPR reporter Ryan Finnerty tells us more.

Bill could increase housing development with less reviews

Hawaii's leaders are offering developers a chance to skip a major vetting procedure by the Land Use Commission, which could determine efforts to protect public lands. Civil Beat reporter Christina Jedra gives us an update on this ongoing legislation. Click here to read the story at civilbeat.org.

Day of Remembrance for Japanese Americans

On Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law Executive Order 9066. It led to the forced removal and incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent. Decades later, it was deemed unlawful. We spoke with Eric Yamamoto, who is the Fred T. Korematsu Professor of Law and Social Justice at the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law. He tells us about Fred Korematsu and the Day of Remembrance. There will be a Day of Remembrance event on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii at 2454 S. Beretania Street in Honolulu. The event is free. President Obama's memorabilia road show

President Barack Obama's presidential library is being built in Chicago, but leading up to the holiday weekend there was a roadshow of sorts at the Biship Museum. Dozens of people brought items to be considered for inclusion into the Chicago venue. Louise Bernard, director of the Obama Presidential Center Museum, Obama Foundation, tells us what they're looking for. Bishop Museum's Richard Pyle talks about the recently discovered fish named after Obama. We also spoke with Melanie Ide, president and CEO of Bishop Museum. Click here for more information on the Barack Obama Presidential Library and click here for more information on the Obama Foundation.
