Zoe Dym
Zoe was a news producer at Hawaiʻi Public Radio. She was born in Honolulu, but grew up in Sacramento, California, and Osaka, Japan. She came back to Honolulu and joined the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's KTUH as DJ California Roll. She quickly fell in love with radio and worked part-time as a board operator at HPR — as well as at Hawaiʻi's all-Japanese radio station, KZOO. After receiving her undergraduate degree in sociology, she joined HPR's news department as a news producer.

ʻĪao Valley State Monument on Maui will reopen next month with a new reservation system for out-of-state visitors. State officials said they are also considering reservations at Mākena State Park. Hawaiʻi residents with identification will continue to get in for free. HPR's Zoe Dym has more.

Oʻahu's only outdoor shooting complex will reopen next week. The range has been closed for nearly eight months due to reports of increased lead exposure. All 12 employees at the Koko Head Shooting Complex took a blood test last year — and nine of them had elevated levels of lead.

The application to decommission another telescope off of Maunakea has been approved. The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Hōkū Kea Observatory will be the second telescope to be deconstructed from the mountain’s summit.

The Surfrider Foundation released its 2022 water quality report for Kauaʻi, Maui and Oʻahu. Two of the islands' fresh and near-shore waters were recorded as having high levels of fecal bacteria that exceeded state health standards.

The state Department of Human Services has published a report on child abuse and neglect in 2021. They found that 2021 had a record number of reported child abuse cases — the highest number of reported in over 10 years.

About 94,000 tons of commercial food waste goes into Oʻahu’s H-POWER every year. The Oʻahu Compost Project plans to divert that waste by turning old food into compost.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced his candidates for the Oʻahu Historic Preservation Commission. The county passed legislation to establish the commission in 1990, but it's never been put to use.
