Maui Journalist Documents The Early Days of Activism

Gary Kubota

Journalist Gary Kubotahas covered news in the islands for  40 decades.

Now he has come out with a book called “Stories Of Change,” thanks to Kokua Hawaii Oral History Project and a grant from the Hawaii Council of Humanities and the Hawaii People’s Fund. Kubota credits the idea for the book to Lawrence Kamakawiwoole.

He was a leader of the group fighting to save pig farmers from being evicted from Kalama Valley out in East Honolulu. As a teen, Kubota was actually arrested as he took part in one protest. He reflected on how that experience and Kamakawiwioole’s idea came together.
