There’s a lot of new development coming to The Ward Village in Kaka‘ako.

The proposal for a mixed-use condominium called ‘A‘Ali‘i was submitted today to the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority.  The location along Queen Street would add an additional 751 homes to the area with at least 100 of those units priced below market in accordance with the HCDA’s reserved housing program.  Developers say the buildings pricing will be targeted towards people in the middle, higher than the affordable housing bracket, but lower than the luxury market.

The building is a small piece of a much larger redevelopment being executed by the Howard Hughes Corporation across their 60 acre planned community. Three mixed-use residential towers - Waiea, Anaha and Ae?o, are currently under construction.  The ground levels will host shops anchored by Longs Drugs and a flagship Whole Foods. The design was also planned around existing Hawaiian burial grounds in the area.

Community Development Vice President Todd Apo says the bigger picture is to create a walkable community where residents have easy access to the rail as well as the market and other activities.

Apo says if the project is approved…. construction to ‘A‘Ali‘i could begin late next year.  The HCDA will conduct a public feedback session before the final plans are approved.

Nick Yee’s passion for music developed at an early age, as he collected jazz and rock records pulled from dusty locations while growing up in both Southern California and Honolulu. In college he started DJing around Honolulu, playing Jazz and Bossa Nova sets at various lounges and clubs under the name dj mr.nick. He started to incorporate Downtempo, House and Breaks into his sets as his popularity grew, eventually getting DJ residences at different Chinatown locations. To this day, he is a fixture in the Honolulu underground club scene, where his live sets are famous for being able to link musical and cultural boundaries, starting mellow and building the audience into a frenzy while steering free of mainstream clichés.
