Trash pickup and other services on Hawaiʻi Island will continue to see delays due to staffing shortages caused by the surge of COVID-19 cases.

Several divisions and services in Hawai‘i County are experiencing delays including Building, Solid Waste, Vehicle Registration and Licensing, Traffic, and Parks Maintenance.

Employees who have had close contact with someone infected with the coronavirus are sent home and asked to get tested.

Those who test positive cannot return to work until cleared by a medical professional. In addition, staff may be required to quarantine for 10 days as directed by the state Department of Health.

The pandemic has also put a burden on staff who have children not able to attend school for various reasons.

As active cases increase, closure or pause on specific services may happen at any time, the county said.

County officials will notify the community if there are any changes.
