Hawaiʻi Island Humane Society locations will reopen to the public next month.
The Animal Community Center in Kona will reopen to the public on Sunday, Aug. 1. The Keaʻau shelter is reopening on Sunday, Aug. 15. Both locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic concerns, the Hawaii Island Humane Society will not be doing a 'grand opening' but rather a welcoming opportunity for the community to come back,” says HIHS CEO Lauren Nickerson.
Guided tours are available, and extra counselors will be onsite to help people looking to adopt a new pet.
The shelters recommend beginning the adoption process virtually by checking out the available animals and submitting an online application.
Anyone interested in bringing home a pet on Aug. 1 from the Animal Community Center in Kona will need to submit an application for review by Tuesday, July 27.
Both the Kona and Keaʻau shelters are looking for volunteers.
“We have redeveloped our volunteer program based on best practices from other animal welfare organizations nationwide to create a new and rewarding volunteer experience and we have a variety of volunteer opportunities in Kona and Keaau,” says Nickerson.
