HPR Fall Membership Campaign Kicks Off

HPR invites the community to invest in their future listening by contributing to the station’s Fall Membership Campaign, which kicks off Wednesday September 29 on HPR-1 and HPR-2.

Contributions from community members make up 94% of the station’s $6.03 million operating budget, and provide critical resources to maintain HPR’s statewide broadcast signal as well as its streaming and other digital services.

Member support has also made it possible for the station to further invest in its local news coverage through several newly created positions on the News team, and the recent launch of Island Insider, a weekly email roundup of local news stories. It has also helped to expand the station’s local music programming; Hawaiʻi Kulāiwi, a Hawaiian music program hosted by Paige Okamura (DJ Mermaid), debuted on August 1. The show explores places and stories that are woven into Hawaiian mele, and the songwriters behind them; it airs Sundays from 6-7 p.m. on HPR-1.

For nine years in a row, HPR has earned a four-star rating (the highest possible) from Charity Navigator, the country’s largest independent evaluator of nonprofits. This sustained top score is an indicator of HPR’s transparency and fiscal accountability, and ensures donors that their contributions will be used wisely. Only 4% of charities evaluated receive this sustained top rating.

Sustaining gifts (automatic monthly donations) are the preferred way to support the nonprofit, noncommercial, community owned radio service. Doing so provides a steady, predictable revenue stream that allows the station to plan for future growth.

The drive begins at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 29 and is scheduled to conclude at noon on Friday, October 8. Donations may be made online or by calling 888-536-4700.
