HPR and Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra have partnered to broadcast the first six performances from the 2019-2020 season, which was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
Each show is hosted by HPR Music Director Gene Schiller and features performances recorded live on the stage of the Blaisdell Concert Hall, as well as interviews with the HSO maestro and/or guest artist.

American conductor Michael Stern returns to lead a grand-opening symphonic celebration featuring Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique. Danny Elfman’s Violin Concerto, Eleven Eleven, brings his dramatic flair to his first true orchestra work performed by the dynamic, show-stopping violinist, Sandy Cameron.

Carlos Miguel Prieto, Musical America’s 2019 Conductor of the Year, and the brilliant pianist Soyeon Kate Lee return to perform this program featuring the sounds and colors of the north. Grieg’s beloved concerto and this powerful symphony by Sibelius will create a soundscape of Nordic nature and beauty.

As part of the Hawaiian Oboe Legacy Project, principal oboist J. Scott Janusch performs a monumental work that celebrates ancient Hawaiian culture on a unique instrument made of rare kauila wood. Japanese conductor Keitaro Harada makes his HSO debut in this program that connects classical music and Hawaii’s rich natural history.

Artistic Advisor JoAnn Falletta returns to conduct this annual event that has become a holiday tradition. The triumphal 9th symphony remains a timeless and relevant tribute to brotherhood and will kick off a year-long celebration of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary.
