This week on Helping Hand, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence follows up with the Hawaii Lava Flow Animal Rescue Network - the HLFARN - a Facebook group that formed last year during the Kilauea eruption to help those needing assistance with pets and animals. Alessandra Rupar-Weber explains how they’ve launched a mission, the Hawaii Cow Rescue, to save cows from the closed Big Island Dairy site, now looking for good homes. The owners of the facility announced they would discontinue operations following an agreement with the state to address discharge issues in to state waters. This group is trying to help the many dairy cows affected by the changes by finding them safe new homes. They have a gofundme fundraising page, too, for donations.
Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide and archived online here in our growing online database of resources. Friday afternoons, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization, topic or event that offers assistance to people with disabilities and people and animals among the most vulnerable.
