This week on Helping Hand, it’s another week in our series relating to the Aloha State homeless crisis, the worst homeless crisis per capita in the country. Mental Health Kokua CEO Greg Payton returns for a conversation with All Things Considered Honolulu Host Dave Lawrence. Mental Health Kokua is the largest mental health nonprofit in Hawaii, providing services here for decades with more than 40 locations statewide offering support to those who are both homeless and mentally ill. They are members of the Oahu coalition of homeless service providers Partners in Care.
Their wish list of most-needed items includes towels, robes, travel size deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo and soap, mops, cleaning supplies, clothing, furniture (which they will pick-up) and learn more about other things they could use by listening to the segment. They're also looking for volunteers on a number of levels, from data entry to working at their rest area, and a variety of other support roles.
Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations each week. On Friday afternoons, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization, topic or event that offers assistance to people with disabilities and people and animals among the most vulnerable. All the previous Helping Hand segments are archived online here.
