Helping Hand - May 31, 2019 complete interview with Laundry Love Kauai

On Helping Hand this week, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence starts four weeks of segments relating to the epic homeless crisis affecting the Aloha State. Recently we learned Hawaii continues to lead the nation per capita with the worst homeless crisis in the country. This week we’re learning about Laundry Love Kauai, one of the local versions of a national concept called Laundry Lovewith our guest Geoff Shields, Laundry Love Kauai Representative for All-Saints Episcopal Church. They operate a partnership with the Kapaa Laundromat.

The idea is to help low income and homeless folks get their clothes and bedding washed; the initiative is a partnership with individuals, groups, and local laundromats throughout the United States. It’s free and for all ages, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexual preferences and cultures. It started with a church in California, and now hundreds of civic organizations, churches, synagogues and mosques around the country have partnered with local laundromats to adopt the program. Learn more here.

Helping Hand is a weekly feature airing statewide on HPR1 stations each Friday as part of our afternoon drive broadcast of All Things Considered, andthen appearing online here, where all of our Helping Hand segments and resources are archived. Every week, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization, topic or event that offers assistance to people with disabilities, and people and animals that are among the most vulnerable.
