This week for Helping Hand, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes back Big Brothers, Big Sisters Hawaii President Dennis Brown, the original “Little Brother” in the Aloha State. Since 1963, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii has partnered with guardians, schools, corporations and others in the community to pair children with carefully screened and trained volunteer mentors as an affiliate of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network. They provide over 600 children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships.
There are lots of ways to support them: you could offer a tour of your office or work location, they accept gently used items and even cars to generate funding, and of course you could be a big brother or big sister.
Helping Hand HPR1 stations Fridays as part of All Things Considered, and online here in our archive of Helping Hand segments. Helping Hand tries to put the spotlight on an organization, topic or event that offers assistance to people with disabilities and those among the most vulnerable.
